Today I discovered…
PhotoPrism
An AI-powered photos app with features such as face/object recognition, smart search filters, automatic classification, tagging, removing duplicates, map, etc.
💖 What I like:
Feature parity with Google Photos: Although not complete but I didn’t find any other self-hosted project that has so much feature parity with Google Photos
Quality filter: Assigns a quality score automatically that is used to filter out low-quality images in search. Has a review mechanism to let user control this further
Progressive Web App (PWA): Feels like native app on mobile and desktop
Easy migration from Google Photos
👎 What I dislike:
Remote sync for Linux: Currently PhotoPrism does support remote sync protocols(WebDAV, rsync, etc.) but it will require third party clients to achieve seamless backup sync. Which means too much time needed to vet different remote sync clients for security. I wish there was a remote sync client provided by PhotoPrism for linux desktop at least, packaged in a single app, and distributed via apt, snap, etc. If that happens, I don’t see any reason why Ubuntu should not make it a default photo app in the next major release. And that’s a big push self-hosted project such as PhotoPrism need to become the leader in photo management.
